HFC Teacher Training

(22A)Primary (X193)

Primary 5-11

Our primary teacher training programme enables you to observe, learn and teach at each stage in a child’s development. It equips you with the subject knowledge and phase knowledge to successfully plan and deliver the National Curriculum.

Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7) and Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11) are fully covered during the course and you will also develop your knowledge of early years (EYFS) and secondary phases.

Throughout the programme, you will work closely with your in school mentor, lead mentor and primary curriculum specialists at university to ensure you get all the support and guidance you need to become a great teacher.

School Placements

During the year you will have 2 school placements, one from September to February half term and the second from February to July. In these placements you will develop your teaching skills and classroom practice by learning from experienced and expert colleagues who have many years of successful teaching in primary schools. In addition to these placements, you will also take part in subject development days at university, to further deepen your understanding of the educational journey of a primary school child. We take note of your transport needs and wherever possible, will seek to place you in schools that are conveniently located for your individual circumstances.

As an integral part of the curriculum, you will experience Intensive Training and Practice experiences (ITAPs) that focus on pivotal aspects of teaching practice and provide further opportunities to observe, reflect and apply what you have learnt, strengthening your understanding of the link between research evidence and classroom practice.

Assessment

Upon successful completion of the course, you will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This can be used as points towards a masters degree should you wish to continue with this accredited professional development.

  • For QTS: Assessment is ongoing throughout the year. Your progress towards meeting the Teacher’s Standards, and acquiring the intended knowledge, understanding, skills and professional behaviours of our curriculum is assessed holistically by school based mentors, subject and/or phase leads, lead mentors and yourself. This includes elements such as target setting, lesson planning, lesson observations, reflective tasks, professional learning conversations and presentations.
  • For the PGCE: Assessment is by 2 written assignments for Liverpool Hope University.
